At the AIMS 2021 Conference, the paper “Unintended Cascading Effects of Expanding Organisational Limits for Resilience: Lessons from the Nuclear Industry” was presented in the thematic session “New Approaches to Uncertainty: Construction, Tools, and Collective Dynamics.” This presentation explored how attempts to enhance organisational resilience in the nuclear sector can produce unforeseen ripple effects.
This research highlighted that in high-risk industries like nuclear energy, efforts to expand resilience capacity—through operational flexibility or expanded structural safeguards—can inadvertently create new vulnerabilities. These “cascading effects” illustrate the complexity of managing resilience in environments with both extreme risk and regulatory constraints.
Aligning with AIMS’ focus on rethinking uncertainty in strategic management, the paper contributed to broader discussions on how organisations build and navigate uncertainty, and the pivotal role of leadership in balancing resilience with risk.
