At the 2021 British Academy of Management (BAM) Conference, two distinguished papers provided significant insights into the role of leadership in organisational resilience, with a focus on managing challenges across different organisational levels.
The first paper, titled “The Role of Leadership for Resilience: Challenges of Sensegiving and Sensemaking Across Organisational Levels” explored how leaders contribute to resilience through “sensegiving” and “sensemaking” processes. These processes are crucial for effective communication and shared understanding, especially in ambiguous or high-pressure scenarios. The authors argued that leaders enhance organisational resilience by helping teams interpret and respond effectively to uncertainty, thereby fostering a resilient organisational culture that supports adaptation at every level.
The second paper, “Capturing the Unobservable: Uncovering Mechanisms of Leadership as Process through a Critical Realist Lens,” provided a philosophical examination of leadership dynamics. This study advocates for a more nuanced understanding of leadership processes, aiming to equip organisations to thrive amidst evolving challenges.
